Information:
National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is an initiative undertaken by the Government of India to
meet the health needs of marginalized rural areas. Launched in April 2005 by
the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the NRHM was initially responsible
for meeting the health needs of the 18 states that had been identified as the weak
public health indicators.
The Union Cabinet headed by Dr. Manmohan Singh vide
its decision dated May 1, 2013, approved the implementation of the National
Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a sub-task of a comprehensive national health
mission (NHM ) with the mission of the national rural health (NRHM) being the
other sub-mission of the national health mission.
